Areas of Usage of Silver Oxide Batteries

Both silver oxide and zinc are major ingredients of silver watch batteries. The positive electrode is silver oxide and negative one is zinc. This is also known as silver-zinc battery. Unlike other counterparts, this type of battery has several benefits. First of all, silver oxide battery is more durable and has high amount of energy to hold high loads of current. Only drawback is that these batteries are a bit costly due to silver metal.  But they are available in both small and large sizes.

Electronics

Silver oxide battery is button sized and it is not too costly. This is why it enjoys popularity in retail marketplace. It is mainly used in calculators and watches. But larger batteries are not for general purposes. But silver batteries of larger size are usually made to be used in military or for some customizable designs. Electrolytes of two types are used in silver oxide battery – sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Batteries made of Potassium hydroxide are generally used in LCD watches and batteries made of sodium hydroxide are generally used in digital clocks.

Military

The Apollo Space and US Military use these batteries as they provide higher performance. They have high energy and they are widely used in aerospace and military industries. They can also withstand heavy load of current. Alfa standard submarines and Mark #7 torpedoes also use these batteries. The major drawback of these batteries is that they can last around 3 to 5 years or 20-25 life cycles for recharging.

The Benefits

As compared to various cells, silver oxide batteries enjoy a lot of benefits. For instance, they have higher voltage for operation than mercury batteries. They have flatter curve for discharge, unlike alkaline batteries. They have larger run time than lithium-ion counterparts. They are not likely to face flammability issues and they are completely away from the issues of thermal runaway. More Info....
